All Audi models have an anti-theft device installed at the factory starting from M-Board. The serial number used matches the serial number encoded on the microchip embedded in the car key. You cannot activate the car without the correct key. Some early Audi models used a separate anti-theft box to “communicate” with the car’s electronic control unit (ECU). Some later models use an anti-theft system that is used in combination with ECUs and dash clocks. In any case, every car key has a transponder chip with a unique security code used to program the Audi car key. A few years ago, Audi stopped providing these codes and did not provide this information to locksmiths or car owners. Obtaining a replacement key from the primary dealer can take 4-12 days, which can be very time-consuming and tedious to duplicate the key or replace the Audi car key set, especially if you lose your car.
